Sand
ripples - Wave like patterns created by wind and sand. The waves run
perpendicular to prevailing wind direction. Distances between single ripples
are proportional to wind strength while strong winds prevent ripples creation
at all. On a microscale it involves a single grain of sand being blown
by wind, pushing other grains on impact, and rolling down off a steep
lee side of a ripple. Details of mechanism of sand ripples and dunes creation
are still not well understood and it is an area of ongoing research. |
